Reading
At Five Lanes Primary, reading continues to be a central focus throughout Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2. As children move beyond early phonics, our aim is to develop confident, fluent readers who can understand, discuss and enjoy a wide range of texts.
Children are exposed to high-quality texts across different genres and are encouraged to think deeply about what they read.
Reading Fluency
Developing reading fluency is an important part of our approach. Children take part in regular reading sessions where they practise reading aloud, develop expression and build confidence with unfamiliar vocabulary.
During these sessions, children may:
-
follow the text while the teacher reads aloud
-
practise echo reading and choral reading
-
explore and learn new vocabulary
-
rehearse sections of text to improve fluency and expression
These activities help pupils to read more smoothly, accurately and with greater understanding.
Understanding What We Read
Alongside fluency, children develop their comprehension skills through discussion and questioning.
During reading lessons, pupils are encouraged to:
-
talk about what they have read
-
answer questions about the text
-
explain their ideas and opinions
-
support their answers using evidence from the text
These discussions help children develop deeper understanding and learn how to think critically about what they read.
Class Texts
Each class studies high-quality texts which are also used to support writing across the curriculum. This allows children to become familiar with rich language, explore different styles of writing and develop their understanding of characters, themes and ideas.
Through these shared reading experiences, pupils develop both their reading comprehension and their enjoyment of books.
A Love of Reading
At Five Lanes Primary, we want every child to see themselves as a reader. Alongside structured reading lessons, children are encouraged to read widely for pleasure and are supported in choosing books that interest and inspire them.
By developing fluency, understanding and enjoyment, we aim to help every child become a confident and enthusiastic reader.
